"Good afternoon, Madame. We are pleased to announce that the category of your room has been changed from" standard "to" premium "- it was with these words that were pleasant for every tourist that I began my acquaintance with the legendary Dead Sea in the oasis of Moevenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea The five-star resort is designed in the style of a traditional Arab village, where all the houses are named after the existing Jordanian settlements - from Ayla to Viva. Having settled in a comfortable room overlooking the pool and flowering gardens, I immediately went for a walk on the first view of the endless territory of the resort.

"Breathe deeper!" I remembered the instructions of our Jordanian guide. Going down to the Dead Sea, you actually plunge into a natural altitude chamber. 420 meters below sea level: in the air 10-15% more oxygen and 10-20 times more bromine than anywhere else on the planet. Antistress therapy begins immediately upon arrival at the resort.

In fact, the Dead Sea can easily compete with Dubai in the number of absolute records, except that here they were established by nature itself. So, we believe: first of all, this is really the lowest point of the Earth, and secondly, the sunniest (332 cloudless days a year) and the warmest place on the planet (in January, air temperature does not drop below 10 degrees Celsius, and water - below 20 degrees). In addition, the Dead Sea coast is the safest point on the planet for sunbathing: the evaporation of salts all year round forms a dense haze over the pool, which serves as a filter for hard ultraviolet radiation.

Of course, the most important attraction and brand of the Dead Sea, annually attracting thousands of tourists and pilgrims from all over the world to its shores, remains its unique natural mineral-salt cocktail. Warm, oily water, the composition of which cannot be reproduced, is 10 times more salty than in other seas. Salts of magnesium, sodium, potassium, and bromine are dissolved in it — more than 30 useful minerals in all have won the status of a global health resort for these protected places.

Natural mud from the Dead Sea is also a mixture of marine minerals and organic substances, formed several thousand years ago. According to legend, the legendary Queen Cleopatra VII used them to create a “balm of beauty”, and the Roman gladiators healed her with bleeding wounds. Minerals help remove toxins, which improves skin elasticity and reduces wrinkles.

The Dead Sea region is well known for its medical centers: thousands of visitors visit it annually to treat skin diseases. By the way, the Moevenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea has one of the largest spa complexes in the region, Zara Spa with a therapeutic center specializing in dermatology and rheumatology, the only such hospital in Jordan. The course of treatment is from a week to a month. Here you can try the procedures of magneto-ozone therapy, mud wraps or plunge into mineral pools.

Center of the earth

The Jordan Valley, in which the Dead Sea stretches, is not just a unique and pleasant looking landscape. This area is a witness to almost all known major historical events. We can learn from what was once done on the site of the present quiet and serene valley both from the works of Aristotle and from the scriptures - the Old Testament and the Koran. It was here, in the Holy Land, that God spoke to man for the first time, the prophet Elijah ascended to heaven from these hills, here Job suffered and was rewarded for his faith, finally, in these places, in the sacred waters of the Jordan, the only river to this day nourishing the Dead Sea, Jesus Christ was baptized.

It was the rich history that made the Dead Sea acquire many different names: Stepnoe, Vostochny, Sodom, Lot Sea, Sea of Salt, Asphalt Sea - this is not a complete list of the names of the unique salt basin. Perhaps the main story, mentioned in both the Old Testament and the Qur'an, is connected with the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, which stood on the trade route from Arabia to Syria and flourishing as the "garden of the Lord." There is no point in retelling the scripture: we all know that about 4 thousand years ago, a powerful earthquake occurred in these places, which consumed five settlements at once in “fire and gray”: Sodom, Gomorrah, Admu, Sevoyim and Segor.

Studies have shown that the earthquake caused a subsidence of the earth's crust, as a result of which the waters of the Dead Sea filled a new basin formed on the site of cities that had sunk into oblivion. Today, the Dead Sea is still divided into two basins - the northern (historical, deeper, where the resorts of Jordan are located) and the southern (on the site of Sodom and Gomorrah, where the industrial zone for the extraction of mineral approvals is located), which do not mix with each other. Therefore, swimming on the beaches of Jordan is completely safe and very useful for pilgrims and just history buffs.
