Study in three tones

Interviewed: Elena Olkhovskaya

In March 2012 DUBAI ARRIVED DANIEL Galvin - star stylist, personal hairdresser of Princess Diana and "THE BEATLES", WINNER OBE FOR invaluable contribution to the hairdresser industry and one of the pioneers of color in the form in which we know it now.

This was a real event for those who are seriously engaged in hairdressing. At the master classes with Daniel Galvin tried to get all the employees of the leading hairdressing salons of the city. Fortunately, we managed to meet with the legendary master in the JetSet salon and talk about what is the ideal hair color in modern fashion.

Daniel, during your more than 50-year career, you have made many women happy by choosing the right shade of hair for them. How not to make a mistake when choosing a color, what should be remembered by women who came to the master for a change in their image?

Right color? It's as simple as twice two! In order to maintain the natural shade of your hair and maintain it as long as possible, you need to learn one important rule - colored hair can be a maximum of three shades lighter than your natural color. Then the hairstyle will perfectly emphasize the natural skin tone and eye color. Light should play in the hair, along its entire length.

How is the fashion for all kinds of crimson or purple colors?

This is for informal or mystical movie actors. I do not believe in fashion trends when it comes to hair color. Fashion can be in haircuts, in different shapes or lengths of hairstyles. I like it when the hair looks natural, when it is healthy and well-groomed, regardless of the haircut or styling. True, the play of light is worse "read" on short hair, so I prefer to dye them in dark, brown and chocolate shades, especially if a woman has blue, gray or green eyes and fair skin - this looks amazing. Sometimes on short hair, a bright red hair color will look incredible, but if the same woman grows her hair slightly, say, to the shoulders, and all the charm of this shade will be lost.

By the way, very few women in the world are equally well suited for dark and blonde hair. The exception I would call, perhaps, Linda the Evangelist. She is surprisingly good both in the image of a brown-haired woman and in the image of a honey blonde. This is an exceptional case.

How to achieve a sense of movement and play of light in the hair. Many women think that they can get this effect through highlighting. Is it so?

Not really. The process of coloring is a whole art. It is usually phased and involves applying light tones (highlighted strands), then darker basic shades along the entire length, then a third intermediate tone between light and dark. This is the only way to get the desired result. With conventional highlighting, the opposite effect may occur - “dead” whitish strands. Moreover, before any dyeing, you must first conduct a hair condition analysis, preliminary consultation and, if necessary, treatment and restoration. After dyeing, it is also necessary on an ongoing basis to take care of the health of the hair - make masks, use the right shampoos and conditioners, try not to expose your hair to frequent hair dryers and irons.

Daniel, it’s not by chance that you entered the hairdressing business and worked with many famous people. Why do you think all of them turned to you?

My father and grandfather were hairdressers, so back in the late XIX century, our surname was well known in London. My career soared to dizzying heights in the 1960s, thanks to a happy occasion. I worked in the famous salon of Leonard - an English master, to whom the most famous people of the city came to do hairstyles. One fine day, a 16-year-old girl came to us by the name of Leslie Hornby, with long hair dyed in some strange red color. Leonard and I gave her a short haircut and gave her hair a natural light shade. The work on creating the final color took me as much as 8 hours! Later, Leslie Hornby became known around the world as Twiggy - a model famous for her boyish forms, and in 1966 was named "Person of the Year", and her further career went uphill rapidly. The technique that I then used to get that very shade of hair was not used by anyone before, but today it is used everywhere. I opened my own salon in 1977, where I specialized mainly in color. His fame quickly spread throughout the UK, and stars of the first magnitude began to come to me.

I worked with Madonna, the guys from the Rolling Stones and The Beatles, with the “Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher. For the last 10 years of Princess Diana’s life, I have been her personal hairdresser.

Having worked with celebrities for so many years, can you determine at a glance whether a new hair color is suitable for a particular person?

Yes of course. For example, I am very sorry that Julia Roberts has ceased to be a dark red beauty, becoming not a particularly bright highlighted blonde. The same goes for Nicole Kidman. The delicate, golden-red color of her hair surprisingly fit her, and now, having become a blonde, she began to look paler.

Have your children followed in your footsteps?

Yes, and not only children. All members of the large Galvin family - my wife, son and daughter are connected with hairdressing, moreover, our clients are the cream of show business. All carriers of the Galvin surname work on the set of films, television shows and commercials, we are invited to do hairstyles for numerous award ceremonies, we produce our own brands of professional hair care products.

Daniel, every artist has a favorite brush with which he creates his best creations. Do you have a favorite tool?

One second (Daniel opens the bag and pulls out a thin red comb with a long metal handle). Here! Without this tool, I’m nowhere! With this comb (look how comfortable and flexible the handle is) I can separate the locks of hair as it is needed to achieve the perfect “live” color in three colors!

Let me thank you for an interesting conversation and an innovative approach to the beauty of hair. We hope that your art will be able to comprehend as many hairdressers around the world as possible. See you soon.
