Unique qiswah bedspread exhibited at one of Abu Dhabi hotels

The silk quilt of the holy Kaaba, a Muslim shrine located in the courtyard of the Mecca Sanctuary Mosque, is on display at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi.

An exposition dedicated to the holy month of Ramadan fasting for Muslims was created in collaboration with the Islamic Bank of Abu Dhabi. It should be noted that this fabric is replaced every year with a new one. This exhibit is dated 1804-1805 years, or 1219 year according to the Hijri calendar. It was commissioned by the Turkish Sultan Selim III.

“Kiswah” is a black silk veil with embroidered gold threads of the verses of the Koran about 41 meters long. The bedspread changes once a year before the hajj. Also, a silk bedspread is used to cover the doors of the Kaaba. The Kaaba itself is a Muslim shrine in the form of a cubic structure in the courtyard of the Sanctuary Mosque. It serves as a reference point to which Muslims of the whole world turn their faces during prayer.
