New Infiniti QX80 - a big car for bad roads

Text: Sergey Tokarev

SO ALREADY HAVE BEEN USED IN THE EDITOR THAT LARGE MACHINES FOR TEST DRIVES HANDLING USUALLY TO ME. AND THEREFORE, THE UPDATED INFINITI QX80 HAS EXACTED TO ME, FOR SAYING IT'S BIG, IT'S NOT SAYING ANYTHING. HE IS HUGE!

THE INFINITI QX80 CAR IS A SEVEN OR AN EIGHT-SEAT SUV. IT CAN HAVE A FULL OR REAR DRIVE. THE MODEL DECIDED IN 2013, AND THE QX56 MODEL WAS HER PRECESSION

Under the hood of the Infiniti QX80 is a gasoline 5.6-liter V-shaped 8-cylinder engine with 400 “horses” and a torque of 560 Nm. The motor works with a 7-position automatic transmission. Of course, these are not all monsters from Nissan, more like a medium-sized truck, but still - more than five meters in length and two in width! Dimensions indicated in the passport of the giant: 5290 × 2030 × 1925 mm. At home in an underground parking lot, I put my Mercedes S-Class next to two SUVs and I feel absolutely comfortable - almost a meter remains to the next car. And after I drove into the parking lot QX80, the passenger had to literally evacuate through the driver's door.

Why do we need such external dimensions, you begin to understand, finding yourself in the cabin. Rather - in the SALON. If you write this word in small letters, then you can not understand what size space we are talking about. For example, in order to take something from the back seat, it is more convenient to get out of the car and get it through the back door. But there is still a third row of seats - when I folded them, it seemed to me that the space formed should be enough to park the Mercedes. Lovers of numbers: trunk volume - 546 liters (with the third row) or 3171 liters (with seats folded). Fancy 1000 three-liter cans? So - they just fit there!

And with such dimensions, I absolutely could not understand: how did the designers manage to achieve that all three headrests of the second row of seats completely cover the rear view? Accustomed to comfort, I first tried to find a magic button that could be used to tilt or lower the head restraints without getting out of the steering wheel. After five minutes of unsuccessful attempts, I guessed to look at the head restraints through the back doors, and then I found that the situation was even worse than I began to suspect - the head restraints did not add up at all! That is, in order for them to stop obstructing the view, you need to ... fold the second row of seats! Can you imagine that? And again, no electric motors - everything is done with your own hands! I could have expected such a catch from Nissan, but from Infinity? So I drove all three days - with the seats folded.

However - towards the negative! If a car of this size is given 22-inch wheels, is this for good reason? To be convinced of their destination I was lucky on the coast of the emirate of Fujairah, where we got out with friends for the weekend. No, we did not storm the dunes, did not conquer the mountains, did not stir mud - a luxury car, as it seems to us, was not created for this. At speeds from 50 to 100 kilometers per hour, we rushed through some complex combination of rubble, gravel, pits, humps and potholes, but it seemed that we were not driving, but we were hovering in the air on an airplane carpet without touching the ground. And if tomorrow they ask me what kind of car the Infiniti QX80 is, I will honestly and loudly answer: most likely, this is not an SUV. It is almost an ideal car for bad roads. I’ll add in a whisper: created for countries where you still don’t have to think about the price of gasoline. Why is it better not to think, you ask? Probably because 25 liters per 100 kilometers is clearly an unbearable burden for the old woman of Europe. Welcome to the UAE!
