Dubai airport runway will be closed for a month and a half

Dubai Airport closes one runway for 45 days.

Dubai Airport operator Dubai Airports earlier this week confirmed plans to close the southern runway (DXB) of Dubai International Airport (DXB) for 45 days in 2019 for a comprehensive upgrade designed to improve security, service and throughput.

DXB operates 24 days 7 days a week, 365 days a year, serving more than 1.1 thousand flights operated mainly by wide-body aircraft. However, planned work requires the complete closure of the runway. The Northern Runway DXB participated in a similar program in 2014.

The reconstruction project of the southern runway includes the laying of about 60 thousand tons of asphalt and 8 thousand cubic meters. m of concrete, laying 800 km of cables and replacing more than 5.5 thousand runway lights using more modern, economical and environmentally friendly technologies.

Work will be carried out from April 16 to May 30, when passenger flow is usually reduced. During the closing period, airlines will need to review their operations at DXB.

As with the 2014 runway modernization program, Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) will be an alternative for scheduled scheduled flights, as well as charter, cargo and general aviation flights. DWC is currently completing an expansion program that will increase capacity from 5-7 million to 26 million passengers per year.

“In the coming months, we will work closely with Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, airlines and other interested parties,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, “We regret any inconvenience our airlines and passengers may experience. These updates "absolutely necessary to increase security, increase throughput and pave the way for future growth."
