UAE Airlines Deploy Wi-Fi Over North Pole

An airline from the United Arab Emirates will provide its passengers with access to high-speed Wi-Fi on long-distance routes.

Emirates from the UAE announced that by 2022, passengers flying from Dubai to the United States will be able to connect to high-speed Internet via the on-board Wi-Fi network, watch videos and make phone calls, even above the North Pole.

Inmarsat partner will commission two new satellites that will serve the Arctic region, which will make it possible to access the Internet via Wi-Fi connection.

Currently, most of the satellites on the route are geostationary (i.e., they are located at an altitude of about 35.8 thousand km above the equator). Because of this, disconnection can occur. On flights from Dubai to the United States, such trips can last up to four hours. New satellites will allow passengers to stay connected throughout the flight.

Currently, over one million Wi-Fi connections to the on-board entertainment system are made monthly on Emirates flights.
