Dubai authorities reminded of severe punishment for begging

Dubai authorities have warned residents of the ban on begging in the emirate.

Dubai authorities have recalled a federal law that prohibits begging. They urged residents not to succumb to the requests of beggars in this Ramadan.

The punishment for begging in the emirate is 5 thousand dirhams ($ US 1.36 thousand) and three months in prison. For organizing a group of beggars, a fine of at least 100 thousand dirhams ($ US 27 thousand) and imprisonment for a term of at least six months is provided.

Police in all emirates launched separate campaigns aimed at combating begging. Official statements emphasize that donations should be made through official charities. Otherwise, most of the money goes to those who do not deserve this money.

All cases of begging should be reported to the police at toll free number 901.
