Smart city in UAE launches unmanned buses

Masdar City in Abu Dhabi demonstrated its first unmanned public transport in action.

Masdar City, the smart city in Abu Dhabi, unveiled its first NAVYA unmanned vehicle. It can carry up to 12 people and does not require driver participation. The shuttle was launched in the presence of dignitaries from the Department of Transport, the Abu Dhabi Police and the French Embassy.

The unmanned bus designed by the French company NAVYA is an autonomous electric vehicle. It moves at a maximum speed of 25 km / h.

Masdar City's transport strategy involves launching seven of these shuttles from next year.

The first shuttle has already passed the test phase and is ready to start regular round-the-clock work on the route connecting the city’s parking zones with the central element of the project.

Over time, the shuttle's route will be expanded. It will link Etihad Eco Residence with the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Majid Al Futtaim My City Center Masdar shopping center, due to be completed in the first half of 2019.

"Masdar City is built on three pillars - economic, social and environmental sustainability - and the launch of our first NAVYA perfectly illustrates this philosophy in real life," said Yussef Baselaib, executive director of real estate at Masdar.

The first shuttle was launched on the route due to the careful work of the transport department of the UAE capital in close contact with the NAVYA group. The car uses on-board cameras and sensors when driving, creating 3D and 2D maps to detect obstacles and their position relative to the vehicle. GPS technology allows the car to determine its exact location, and V2X - to communicate with traffic lights.
