Abu Dhabi introduces new speeding tickets

Abu Dhabi will be fined for speeding from 1 km.

Starting on August 12, motorists who exceed the speed limit on the roads of Abu Dhabi, even by 1 km, will be fined. Abu Dhabi police canceled a 20 km speed buffer.

Abu Dhabi Police Headquarters previously announced plans to revise speed limits. From August 12, the current 20 km speed buffer will be canceled, motorists will be fined for any excess, even 1 km.

Abu Dhabi Police Commander Lieutenant General Muhammad Khalfan Al Romaifi said that the decision to change the speed limit was not made by accident, but after a series of scientific studies.

Recall that currently fines are issued to drivers only if the speed limit is exceeded by 20 km.

The priority for the Abu Dhabi police is to ensure road safety and reduce the number of traffic accidents, injuries and deaths.

"The Abu Dhabi police will continue to do everything possible to ensure the safety of all road users in the capital. We urge all motorists to be extremely attentive, not to violate the high-speed mode, to wear a seat belt, to refrain from using mobile phones, and keep a distance," authorities said.

In January, Abu Dhabi police released data according to which, in 2017, 4.6 million fines were issued to drivers in Abu Dhabi, most of which relate to speeding.

Violation of the speed limit takes the top line, accounting for about 80% of the total.

Judging by the statistics of past years, the number of fines issued for speeding is only growing every year. So, in 2016, 3.7 million fines were issued, in 2017 - 3.8 million, the statistics for 2018 have not yet been published.

Abu Dhabi police have taken a number of technical measures aimed at encouraging motorists to comply with the high-speed regime.

Lieutenant General Al Romaifi emphasized that the decision to remove the high-speed buffer was based on research conducted by a team of experts from the Abu Dhabi Police Headquarters, the Departments of Transport and Urban Planning, as well as local administrations.

The head noted that the studies concerned the behavior of road users with the current rule of the speed buffer and without it. Some countries have achieved outstanding results in improving road safety after conducting such studies. Mr. Al Romaifi called on all motorists to positively accept the innovations.
