1,500 prisoners pardoned in UAE

Leaders of the United Arab Emirates have pardoned hundreds of prisoners on the eve of the celebration of National Day.

UAE President Sheikh Khalifa ordered the release of 645 prisoners on Monday, November 27, before the celebration of the 46th National Day of the country.

He also promised to pay their financial debts to enable them to start a new life and alleviate the suffering of their families.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and ruler of Dubai, also granted amnesty to 606 prisoners on the occasion of the holiday.

Isam Al Khumaidan, the attorney general of Dubai, said the vice president and ruler of Dubai had decided to issue an amnesty order to give prisoners the opportunity to re-engage in society.

Mr. Al Humeidan said the prosecutor’s office is coordinating with the Dubai police to carry out the order.

Sheikh Saud bin Sakr al-Qashimi, ruler of the emirate of Ras al-Khaimah, pardoned 246 prisoners. Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud, the Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah, instructed the President of the Judicial Council of the Emirate to take the necessary measures to implement orders in coordination with the police.

Each year on the eve of religious holidays, the president and rulers of the emirates grant amnesty to prisoners and order forgiveness of debts that prevent many from leaving prison.

Last year, Sheikh Khalifa ordered the release of 1,102 prisoners to mark National Day.
